While you are probably not thinking about Holiday shopping just yet, there are a few simple steps you can take early in the year for a stress-free December.
1. Create your budget now.
Decide how much you plan to spend on gifts this year. Then break that down into a monthly set-aside and start accumulating funds throughout the year.
2. Start a gift-recipient list.
Jot down the names of the people that you want to shop for. Don't worry about specific gifts yet - just create a capture list to work from throughout the year.
3. Add to the list as ideas come to you.
When you get a specific gift idea for someone, add it to the list. If you haven't created a shopping list - no worries, capture gift ideas in Outlook or whichever contact management system you use.
4. Shop at a leisurely pace throughout the year.
Since you are accumulating shopping funds throughout the year, you can grab perfect gifts as you come across them. Also, you can focus on finding better deals.
5. Plan some time for yourself in December.
Just as you budget your spending, be sure to budget some time for yourself as well. Why not plan a day or two off around the Holidays? Whether you take a local day trip or just an afternoon at the movies, a big part of the usual Holiday stress is feeling like there is not enough time. But this year, with your shopping nearly done, a pre-planned vacation day will be something you can really enjoy.
6. Include something for yourself in your budget.
While you are at it, be sure to earmark some funds for yourself in your budget. This will help make Holiday shopping a lot more fun. Save your splurge purchase for last - as a reward for finishing.
7. Enjoy the Holiday season.
By shopping throughout the year, odds are you will find better gifts than usual and come in under budget. With your shopping done early and some time set aside for rest and relaxation, you can really enjoy the best part of the Holiday season - time with friends and family.
