You all know how important oral hygiene is to our overall well-being.
The switch from a traditional toothbrush to an electric tooth brush
usually brings up some questions like available brands, cost, and
whether they are really worth the investment. We'll try to clear some
of those questions up for you here. We’ll tell you some of the benefits
of an electric tooth brush, what to look for in a brush, and discuss a
few brands.
Benefits of an Electric Toothbrush
First and foremost, an electric tooth brush simply moves its bristles
much faster than the human hand can move. This function alone helps
your teeth to be cleaner, stronger and healthier. When you’re able to
concentrate on the cleaning process as opposed to how vigorously you’re
moving your hand, you achieve a much more thorough clean.
An electric tooth brush is more apt to remove more plaque and or tartar
build-up. The bristles are designed to reach further between each tooth
to prevent decay. An electric toothbrush also works at really scrubbing
away unwanted problems such as stains from coffee or tea.
People who have bone pain, joint pain, arthritis or other movement
impairing issues will find an electric toothbrush is much easier to
use. The brush scrubs and does the work so you don’t have to.
Types of Electric Toothbrushes
There are two types of electric toothbrushes: Rotary and Sonic. Rotary
style brushes spin in a circle whereas Sonic style electric brushes
pulsate. Something good to know before purchasing any toothbrush is
that many traditional rotary designs haven’t been changed in years.
Sonic brushes such as Sonicare Flexcare and Philllips Sonicare Essence
are among the newer designs in the marketplace.
However, if a more traditional style rotary brush is something you like
better than a sonic brush, there are a few brands of rotary brushes
that are more advanced technologically. Braun, Oral B, Interplak, and
Rotat-dent have made many advances in recent years.
What to Choose and Why
The best cleaning results will come from a brush that rotates and
oscillates or one that delivers pulses of power. Studies have shown
these types of brushes deliver a better overall cleaning than
traditional brushes. Price points will vary with the individual
purchasing the brush, but remember it’s best to buy a better brush that
does the work than to buy a cheaper brush for the fact of saving money.
In the end you won’t be satisfied with your purchase: buy something you
know you will use.
Brands of Electric Toothbrush
Sonicare
FlexCare R910 Toothbrush is sold for around $140. This brush is
designed to give the user cleaner teeth, better gum health, and a
naturally whiter smile. It has two cleaning routines, a two minute
timer which is the dentist recommend brushing time, and rechargeable
battery. The built in interval timer encourages spending time on each
section of your mouth.
The Phillips
Soncicare Essence starts at around $100. It has two handles, two
standard brush heads, a 30 second interval timer to encourage brushing
of each section of the mouth, and a contoured brush head. This model
boasts that it is clinically proven to significantly reduce coffee,
tea, and tobacco stains on teeth.
There’s also the Waterpik
Sensonic Professional Toothbrush for around $80. One customer had
this to say about the brush, “Wow! This brush is terrific! It takes
much less time to achieve the same results as it did with a normal
battery-operated toothbrush, and my teeth are MUCH cleaner!” Reviews
like this one are very common on the internet.
Oral B and Crest
each make an electric Spinbrush that retails for around $15 in most
department stores. These brushes don’t have all the functions the
Sonicare brushes have, but they are electric and they do have the ADA:
American Dental Association stamp of approval.
Our Conclusion
As with any toothbrush, manual or electric, the most benefits will come
from daily brushing. You have to take the time to clean your teeth
properly to prevent tooth decay. No matter how much money you spend,
your toothbrush will not magically make your teeth better if you only
use it once a week. You must exercise good dental hygiene in order to
reap the benefits of your purchase. The ideal would be to brush after
each meal and then again before bed.
According to most reviews we found online, the Waterpik Sensonic
Professional Toothbrush, Sonicare FlexCare, and Phillips Sonicare
Essence are the best electric toothbrushes on the market today. Most
come with a money back guarantee, so what have you got to lose?
