How to Buy an LCD TV - 8 Things to Consider 3D TV deals are becoming more popular as time progresses. Samsung, Sony and Panasonic are frontrunners in this new home theater technology. Among the most popular and affordable manufacturers of 3D televisions is Samsung, followed closely by Sony and Panasonic. 3D technology is available in all three of the most popular television types; LED, LCD and Plasma.

What Is 3D TV and How Does It Work?

3D HDTV is three-dimensional, high definition television. It allows you to achieve the same three-dimensional picture at home that you would see with the red and blue glasses at your local cinema.

Each eye must see things slightly different in order to produce a three dimensional effect. In fact, the placement of our eyes is what causes us to be able to gauge distance. Alternate covering your left eye and right eye, and take note of the subtle differences in each; those differences are what cause us to see in 3D.

The technology used to produce 3D TV at home mimics our own natural ability to see things in three dimensions. Special pictures and specific types of glasses are used to trick us into seeing movies the same way we see naturally.

3D Glasses

The technology that brings 3D TV home works differently than the technology used at the cinema. Instead of using glasses with one blue lens and one red lens, shutter glasses are used. Most 3D glasses for home theater use are battery powered and rechargeable.

We naturally see depth when the images from each eye come together. A 3D television must have a refresh rate of at least 120Hz with alternating frames and shutter glasses to achieve the three dimensional effect. These special glasses sync with the screen to alternate opening and closing the shutters so that our minds see the final product: a fully three dimensional effect.

3D HDTV and Your Home Theater System

3D TV deals are springing up everywhere high-end televisions are sold. You can buy a 46" Class 750 Series 3D 1080p LCD HDTV, loaded with Samsung Apps, for around $1,700. The Class 750 Series is only 3.2" thick and receives 4.7 stars out of a possible 5 with 9 reviews. Most buyers said they did a lot of research before setting their mind on this 3D television and couldn't be happier.

The two top-selling 63" 3D HDTVs we looked at were by Samsung and both were Plasma. Plasma televisions have, in the past, had a reputation for being sluggish when changing picture, leaving a slightly blurred look. These two televisions received rave reviews:

Samsung  63" Class 8000 Series 3D 1080p Plasma HDTV: This television received 4.8 stars out of a possible 5 stars and had 5 reviewers. 100% of the people reviewing this television said they would recommend it to a friend. Prices start around $3,800 for this 1.4" thick television. It is easily one of the thinnest HDTVs we found while searching for great 3D TV deals.

Many people looking to purchase a thin television are planning to hang it on the wall to save space and protect their investment. One of the most impressively thin televisions we came upon is Samsung's 55" Class 9000 Series 3D 1080p LED HDTV at an amazing .31" thick. Yes, we said less than half an inch. This one also comes with Samsung Apps and a premium accessory package. When Samsung says "Ultra Slim Design," they mean it! This television received 4.5 out of a possible 5 stars and starts at around $6,000.

The Sony BRAVIA LX900 also rakes in rave reviews from most buyers. One reviewer out of the 17 we discovered was displeased with the "disgraceful" 3D capability. This makes us think they may have received a bad set when we compare that review with 16 others who absolutely fell in love with the 3D television as soon as they got it home. Cons included "slow remote response", "none", "none", "none", you get the idea. This television starts at around $4,000.

3D TV is relatively new, but has taken off like wildfire. In most of the reviews we found, buyers had tested incredible movies like Avatar and Toy Story 3D before writing their review. Once you've chosen the 3D TV deal that's best for you, buckle up and enjoy the ride!
