For the long-suffering Office users on Mac systems waiting for a Universal Binary version, here's a way to fast track your upgrade to the new MS Office 2008 for Mac OS with a big discount: purchase one of:
upgrade to the full Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition for $7 by mail. This edition includes Word, Excel, Power Point, Entourage, and more. You could alternatively just pre-order the new version, but it's priced at $475. We followed a similar program when Office went to the 2004 edition and it worked great. Microsoft reliably ships upgrades like this although they do indicate it'll take up to 6-8 weeks to receive your full Office 2008 discs after the office product launch on January 15.
Shipping is free on the 2004 editions (really no reason to buy anything but the Student and Teacher Edition). This program is valid on purchases through January 14. Be sure to file the upgrade form right after you receive the 2004 program.
