Chris: The biggest online sales day so far was last Thursday and we’ll be watching to see if today can blast through that record. Overall, sales are up about 20% over last year with consumer electronics and apparel making the biggest gains.
We’ve seen some of the key promotions driving those numbers including the key Playstation 3 price drop earlier in the fall that’s helping Sony catch up in the gaming console wars. Of course high definition disc players are also in a battle with huge price drops on both HD DVD and Blu-Ray Disc players. Right now, for example, you can pick up a Toshiba A30 HD DVD player for $249 or a Samsung Blu-Ray Disc Player for $270. Both include multiple free discs as well.
Now is also the time for lots of quick sales. We’ve been seeing many one and two-day sales and specials and that’s likely to intensify in the next week as we approach shipping deadlines.
Michael: Earlier this week, we launched our comprehensive list of shipping information for 120 top online retailers. The list includes ordering deadlines for standard, express and overnight shipping options as well as gift certificate information and customer service telephone numbers.
Chris: Now how did we determine the deadlines for all these stores?
Michael: Well, short answer, by going and looking at everybody's shipping policies. A lot of the retailers already had posted their Holiday Shipping Schedule and whenever that was the case, that's precisely what we referenced. But for those cases where they didn't have it posted, we just looked at their standard policies and applied it to the calendar. Although I will say that a lot of the retailers are dribbling out--one or two a day--with an official shipping deadline list. And so we're checking those retailers frequently and making changes to our list whenever the merchants publish new information.
